2017 promises to be an exciting year for Cummins enthusiasts, as we roll out two long-awaited developments: full production of our all-new X15 heavy-duty truck engines and the launch of our direct-to-consumer crate engine program. Drivers and wrench turners alike have much to look forward to in the months ahead.
X15 Performance and Efficiency Series for Heavy-Duty Truck
Cummins legendary ISX15 heavy-duty truck engine has been an industry favorite for nearly 20 years. In 2017, Cummins engineers are taking reliability, performance and efficiency to the next level with full production of the X15 Performance and Efficiency Series engines. The new X15 engine platform is an innovative approach to duty-cycle optimization, with two distinct engine series offerings so that owners don’t have to compromise.
X15 Performance Series Engines
are designed to deliver ideal power for heavier loads. With ratings from 485 hp to 605 hp and available torque up to 2,050 lb-ft, the X15 Performance is a real powerhouse. An upgraded high flow air-handling system provides faster pedal response and superior drivability for full payloads and steep grades. Peak torque across a wide rpm range and exceptionally strong engine brakes only add to the appeal of this extraordinary engine.
X15 Efficiency Series Engines are the perfect fit for line-haul and regional-haul operations with ratings from 400 hp to 500 hp and available torque up to 1,850 lb-ft. When integrated with the Cummins and Eaton® SmartAdvantage™ Powertrain, the X15 Efficiency is proven to deliver 10-20% better fuel efficiency than 2010 models with equivalent displacement. Extended oil-drain and fuel filter change intervals, a maintenance-free breather filter, the elimination of the hydrocarbon doser and more also translate to a dramatically lower cost of ownership – around 40% less over the first 500,000 miles compared to a 2010 Cummins ISX15.
More than nine million miles of real world driving in the largest field test of Cummins history have validated the reliability and performance of these new heavy-duty truck engines. Full production is scheduled to begin in January.
Cummins Repower™ Crate Engines
Until now, the only way to integrate Cummins power into an existing vehicle was scavenging a used engine from another factory-installed application. Soon, however, Cummins fans will be able to get their hands on brand new Cummins engines direct from the factory.
Coming in 2017, the Cummins Repower program will begin distributing our first commercially available crate engine, the R2.8 Turbo Diesel. The R2.8 is a lightweight 2.8-liter engine perfect for small 4×4’s, pickups, SUV’s and more. It delivers 160 hp and a flat 267 lb-ft torque from 1600 to 3,200 rpm.
The engine ships with all necessary wiring, an engine control module and other major components required for engine operation, as well as documentation to make it 50-state emissions compliant for qualifying vehicles.
